Nigeria's Christy Essien Igbokwe honoured by Google



Boy ! i was thrilled, when i hit google search only to find Christy Essien-Igbokwe as Google's doodle for the day. Wow!

It was the lady of songs, Christy Essien-Igbokwe 58th Posthumous birthday.

Christy, who was born in Okat, Onna Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, but grew up in Aba, Abia state, after losing her mum, when she was just 12 years old.


The singer was famous for her hit song, “Seun Rere”, 
Apart from her native dialect Ibibio, she was also fluent in Ibo, Yoruba, Hausa and several Nigerian languages.

She was also the first female president of the ( PMAN ) Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria and also managing director of Soul Train Entertainment Limited.


But she started off first as an actress featuring on ‘The New Masquerade’, a popular drama series in the 70s. She played the role of Akpenor, the wife of the cantankerous character, Jegede Sokoya (played by Claude Eke).

Her role on that popular show placed her in the limelight and in 1977 she launched her
professional music career by releasing her debut album called ‘Freedom’. Many of her
albums became hit records, but none came close to the success of her 1981 hit album ‘Ever Liked My Person’ produced by Lemmy Jackson.

She died on 30 June, 2011, just aged 50 years.
